An Open Letter to Image Hot-linkers

Dear Image Hot-linkers,

I’ve noticed that there’s been a dramatic increase in traffic coming here from Google Image Search and I assume it’s because of my mad Photoshop skillz, however, I’ve noticed that with that increased traffic there has been a dramatic increase in image hot-linking. If you don’t know what that is, it’s when you copy and paste the URL of an image into another web page, resulting in anyone viewing that page causing a hit on my server. That means my bandwidth is used to serve the image, rather than the site you’re using.

Now look, I’m a reasonably hip dood, and I don’t really mind if you want to do that, provided you at least, somewhere, give a link back to my website to shore up some traffic back here. That’s pretty basic Internet courtesy.

Some people, however, aren’t doing that, so I’ve had to take retaliatory action. Taking a cue from Mike Davidson, I modified the images that are being hot-linked, except instead of supporting hot girl-on-girl action (which is the best kind of action there is), I’ve just added my web address to the images. If this continues, or gets worse, I’m going to have to flip the switch on the server that disables image hot-linking, which I think kind of sucks.

In case you’re curious, the offenders hit the Rose & Camellia screenshot I made (which honestly anyone can make on their own), and my Thor in ‘08 bumper sticker (which is frickin’ awesome!). Incidentally, the Thor in ‘08 bumper sticker was hot-linked heavily back when the post was first made, but all those people linked back to my site so it was all good.

Sincerely,
