I will concede that Costco brand oven-roasted turkey breast priced at $3 a pound is pretty hard to pass up, but food poisoning is a serious bitch.
FYI, I’m an idiot.

I previously wrote about and praised John Gruber’s Word Count script, which uses Jesper’s ThisService to add a systemwide service to Mac OS X.
I have one minor quibble with it, however. While a word count is invaluable for prose, there times in computer-related writing when you actually might want a character count as well or [...]

Start the weekend right: with a video from The State’s Daid Wain which co-stars the spectacular Paul Rudd (as the pick-up artist “Alias”) and a chick from Heroes.

If you’ve ever seen any of the awful The Pick Up Artist then you’ll know where Paul Rudd’s character comes from.
The other videos in David Wain’s Wainy Days [...]

I think I’ve been really lucky lately, in that I’ve been seeing a bunch of great movies. I saw Juno two weeks ago, Cloverfield over the weekend, the The Mist (free, courtesy of Zach and the U.S. Navy) on Tuesday, and then The Savages last night. ((Oddly, I think The Mist may have been [...]

Two more production companies join the ranks of the not-insane.
Ten bucks says Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk need major fixes in the form of new or rewritten scenes. Just a guess, based on my total lack in faith in either of these films.

I just noticed the UCSD website has had a much-needed major redesign, which I think is it’s first real change in at least 10 years. It looks much better, and the information layout strikes me as more sensible as well. It still clearly suffers from linkage overload, but I’m afraid that’s a cultural problem shared [...]

I just cant get over the fact that Manhattan was destroyed by a soft-shell crab.

My cousin Rana June, in regards to Cloverfield.

I love my family.

John Mueller of the LA Times made a pretty fantastic chart of the number of bad guys killed by Rambo (with and without his shirt on) in the various films of the series, including the most recent one. That chart can be seen here (via World of Wonder).
Going just by the numbers, it looks like [...]

Tom Cruise Is a Cock-Block on FunnyOrDie.com
The Tom Cruise impression is uncanny. Also, friggin’ hilarious.

Long story short, Great White Snark’s reaction to Cloverfield differs vastly from mine, and I’d like to talk about that.
First let me make note of the two points he raises that I completely agree with: 1) the shaky-cam is awful and 2) the film doesn’t do enough of what it does really well.
I think as [...]

I just saw Cloverfield with my buddy Zach and all I have to say is WOW!
Well, that’s not all I have to say. Here’s a run-down of my thoughts:
1) It’s amazing how little character business you really need in a script. Within the first ten minutes all the major characters are introduced and, more importantly, [...]

Dear Robert Scoble,
I recently came across a very disturbing photograph that I’d like to talk to you about. The photograph in question is the following:

Let me be perfectly clear, so as to avoid any confusion on this particular topic: WHAT THE DOOCE ARE YOU DOING WITH MY COUSIN?!
That’s right — the girl you’re getting jiggy [...]

The WGA has released their list of nominees for the awards they give out (presumably, writing awards).
The nominees for best screenplay are a bunch of films I haven’t seen but really want to, and Knocked Up. I saw half of Knocked Up and found it to be… what’s that word?… garbage. And keep in mind [...]

The AMPTP’s response to the UA-WGA deal was that it was bad because it will “mean only that some writers will be employed at the same time other writers will be picketing” (because, obviously, the AMPTP is looking out for the writers’ best interests). Peter David makes this fine observation:

Curiously the AMPTP ignores that the [...]

Don’t allow my goal of using as many acronyms as possible in the title of this post obscure its message: United Artists has signed a deal with the Writer’s Guild of America. I officially take back all the jokes I made about Tom Cruise and his stupid face, and would like to go on the [...]

Chris McCann, writing for The Stranger, reviews The Thomas Street Bistro:

After an hour and a half, we’d gotten through a decent lentil soup and grazed on a buttery tahini and some damp feta with fresh tomatoes. And then our waiter brought out a “free appetizer” he described as follows: “It’s salmon, smoked, from Alaska. With [...]

John Gruber explained how to set this up a year ago:

Back in October my friend Jesper wrote a nifty little utility called ThisService. You give ThisService a script — either AppleScript or any Unix scripting language such as Perl, Python, or Ruby — and it generates a system-wide service based on that script, right there [...]

Jane Espenson, of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Battlestar Galactica screenwriting fame, has probably the best blog out there for tips on writing. She starts the new year off with this amazing gem:

Here’s a neat bit of writing vocabulary for you. I recently heard a new one. How cool is this? I am told by [...]

Am I the only one that thinks the world could use more Imagineers?
