WordPress 2.5 Is Spiffy

Just upgraded to WordPress 2.5 and, WOW, Matt & gang have really outdone themselves. All the little annoyances with the administration of WP have not only been fixed, but they’ve fixed them in really smart ways. For example, WP 2.5 now gives you a preview of what your url is going to be, right under the title, which you can edit if you so choose (I did):

Post management has also been greatly updated, finally allowing you to manage posts based on tags, which means I can start using tags again. Sweeet!

There are a few differences that seem weird, though. Image uploading has now gotten all AJAX-y, and, unfortunately, more complicated. It strikes me as a case where “more advanced” isn’t necessarily better.

From my limited experience building a simple webapp (to run Angel Ants) I would say that building a proper administration interface is 70% of the work. I half-assed the admin panel for Angel Ants because I knew I was the only one that was going to be using it, and it was quite pitiful compared to what they’ve done with WordPress. That’s one of the reasons why Django, and it’s built in admin panel building framework, is so interesting, though I’m sad to admit that I still haven’t been able to really play with it.

Long story short: WordPress 2.5 it already looks like a winner. Woot!
